چکیده

Incompressible, turbulent flow past a circular cylinder is computationally investigated by means of Reynolds Averaged Numerical Simulations. Problems in using the wall-functions approach for modeling the near-wall turbulence are demonstrated. As the main turbulence model, the Shear Stress Transport model is employed, by resolving the nearwall layer. A wide range of Reynolds numbers is investigated (Re=110 to 510), encompassing the critical regime. Predicted drag coefficients are compared with measurements from the literature. The procedure is shown to be able to predict the boundary layer transition and the associated drag coefficient reduction, qualitatively. Quantitatively, predicted drag coefficients are observed to underestimate measurements for all Reynolds numbers. Present analysis will be extended to more sophisticated transient models, which will be discussed in the oral presentation. Key-Words: Turbulent Flow Past Circular Cylinder, RANS, SST model, CFD.

Numerical Predictions of Turbulent Mixed Convection Heat Transfer to Supercritical Fluids Using Various Low Reynolds Number k-e Turbulence Models

There are a number of systems in which supercritical cryogenic fluids are used as coolants or propellant fluids. In some modern military aircraft, the fuel is pressurized above its critical point and used as a coolant to remove heat from the aircraft engine. Accurate prediction of heat transfer coefficients to turbulent flows of supercritical fluids is essential in design of such systems. One o...

A Dual -‐ Mesh Framework for Turbulence Modeling : Application to Flow Around a Circular Cylinder

To overcome this difficulty, various hybrid LES/RANS approaches have been developed, where RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) equations are solved in the near-wall region while LES is only conducted in the free-shear region away from the wall [Fröhlich and von Terzi 2008]. One of the methods to address this issue is a consistent framework for turbulence modeling, where the filtered and Reyn...

Effects Of Frequency Variation At Inlet Flow On The Vortex Shedding Frequency Behind A Circular Cylinder

In many applications the flow that past bluff bodies has frequency nature (oscillated) and it is not uniform. This kind of flow has effects on the formation of vortex shedding behind bluff bodies. In this paper the flow around a circular cylinder was numerically simulated. The effects of frequency variation at inlet flow on the vortex shedding frequency were investigated. The transient Two-Dime...

Numerical Simulation of Separation Bubble on Elliptic Cylinders Using Three-equation k-? Turbulence Model

Occurrence of laminar separation bubbles on solid walls of an elliptic cylinder has been simulated using a recently developed transitional model for boundary layer flows. Computational method is based on the solution of the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the eddy-viscosity concept. Transitional model tries to simulate streamwise fluctuations, induced by freestream turbulen...

Boundary Layers and Heat Transfer on a Rotating Rough Disk

The study of flow and heat transfer over rotating circular disks is of great practical importance in understanding the cooling of rotatory machinery such as turbines, electric motors and design and manufacturing of computer disk drives. This paper presents an analysis of the flow and heat transfer over a heated infinite permeable rough disk. Boundary-layer approximation reduces the elliptic Nav...
